Thyroid Management

Thyroid Management

A small butterfly-shaped organ in your neck of the body is responsible for all the chemical processes happening in the body, mainly metabolism, this is the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland produces the thyroid hormones T4 and T3, which work throughout the body to tell the cells how much energy to be used. They control the heart rate and temperature. In addition, it plays a vital role in digestion, brain development, heart function, brain function, and the maintenance of bones.

Understanding thyroid problems are very complex as it shows very differently in every individual.

The thyroid gland produces thyroid hormone which is responsible for metabolism in the body. The thyroid hormone influences the metabolic rate.

There are two types of thyroid problems depending upon whether too much or too little thyroid hormone is released: Hypothyroid and hyperthyroid.

Hypothyroid is when there is an underproduction of the thyroid hormone which causes the body’s metabolic function to slow down. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

  • Tiredness
  • Feeling too cold
  • Weight gain
  • Heart problems
  • Anemia

The main treatment for hypothyroidism is hormone replacement therapy.

Hyperthyroidism is the proper contrast to hypothyroidism. Here there is too much production of the T3 and T4 hormone, this causes the metabolism to speed up. Symptoms include:

  • Extreme weight loss
  • Unable to manage heat
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Increased appetite
  • Anxiety and confusion

Ideally speaking in normal thyroid condition, you must be somewhere in the middle, when speaking of thyroid symptoms. Therefore, the management of the thyroid aims to bring you to the middle ground.
